THE CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLE

Parishioners are invited to take part in the old Irish tradition of placing a lit candle in a window on Christmas Eve. As a sign of welcome to all on this night.

The Irish custom of leaving a candle in the window is a common tradition at Christmas in Ireland. It was a symbol of welcome to Mary and Joseph as they travelled, looking for shelter. It was a symbol of the Irish tradition of signalling to any stranger that they were welcome to the house and that none would be turned away.
The candle also reminds us all of Christ as the light of the world.
On this Christmas Eve, we can all make the effort to light a candle and place it in the window of our homes as a symbol of our Faith and a sign of welcome.
On this holiest of nights, we wish you all peace, comfort and joy.

Bail ó Dhia ar an Obair Sár-Thábhachtach seo! The night before He died for us, Jesus prayed earnestly to His Heavenly Father for us, "May they all be one - as You, Father, are one in Me and I in You, may they also be one IN US." (John 17:21) This is the whole purpose of our lives here on Earth! ... or, as one of our finest Irish poets of the last century, Patrick Kavanagh from Iniskeen, put it in a nutshell: "Only they who fly home to God have flown at all"!!! (line 8 of "Beyond the headlines", THE COMPLETE POEMS, p. 130)

That is so lovely. A very Happy and Holy Christmas to you Fr Malachy Murphy rev. & All who hold Our Parish Together. And All my Family & Friends. . 🙏 🎄 🎅. X
